Imagine having a marketing budget of roughly £7,500 every single month to promote your charity on Google – completely for free.

For registered UK charities and certain Community Interest Companies (CICs), this isn’t a pipe dream. It’s the Google Ad Grant. This incredible initiative gives qualifying non-profits £7,500 per month in free Google Search advertising credits to help boost donations, recruit volunteers, and spread awareness.

However, the application process can feel a bit daunting if you aren’t a tech expert. In this guide, we break down exactly how to secure this funding for your organisation step-by-step.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before you spend time applying, make sure your organisation qualifies. To get the Google Ad Grant in the UK, you must:

  • Be registered as a charity with the Charity Commission (England and Wales), the OSCR (Scotland), or the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.

  • Alternatively: Certain CICs (Community Interest Companies) can qualify, but they must be registered with key support organisations like Percent (Google's official verification partner).

  • Have a live, secure website (https://) that clearly explains your mission and features high-quality content.

Note: Governmental organisations, public hospitals, and schools are generally not eligible.

Step 2: Register with Google for Nonprofits

The first official step is creating a Google for Nonprofits account.

  1. Head to the Google for Nonprofits portal online.

  2. Sign in using your charity’s main Google or Gmail account.

  3. Enter your official charity registration number. Google will automatically route your details to Percent to verify that you are a legitimate good cause. This verification process usually takes between 2 to 5 working days.

Step 3: Request the Google Ad Grant UK Activation

Once your charity is verified by Percent, log back into your Google for Nonprofits dashboard. Click on "Activate" under the Google Ad Grants section. You will be asked to fill out a brief assessment detailing exactly how you intend to use the ads to support your mission.

The Golden Rule: Keeping Your Grant Safe

Getting the grant is the easy part – keeping it is where many small charities struggle. Google has incredibly strict compliance rules to make sure its free search space isn't abused. To keep your account active, you must:

  • Maintain a 5% minimum Click-Through Rate (CTR) across your active campaigns.

  • Set up valid conversion tracking (like tracking how many people click your donation button).

  • Avoid single-word keywords or overly generic search terms.

If your CTR drops below 5% for two consecutive months, Google will automatically pause your account.
